Paris, with its timeless allure and enchanting streets, often tops the list of dream destinations for many millennials. Contrary to the notion of Paris as a popular layover spot or too lavish to enjoy on a budget, the City of Light is ripe with experiences that are both affordable and deeply enriching. Before we get too deep into this guide, I need to start with this – Paris is not a city you try-out via a layover. I would never advise that your first visit be a layover, or something that you can do in 24-hours. I write this after not being “impressed” by Paris after my own 8-10 hour first time visit as a broke undergraduate student.
The only times I have seen someone “hate” Paris is when they attempted to do it as a stopover to another destination, or like me in my mid-twenties — short and cheap. And really, should you be reviewing a city that you only ever spent 8-10 hours in? You can do it, but should you – absolutely not. Here’s how you can immerse yourself in the magic of Paris, with a realistic timeline and on a reasonable budget (notice that I wrote “immerse”).
1. Plan Your Visit During the Off-Peak Season
The secret to enjoying Paris without the crowds while saving on accommodation? Visit during the off-peak season. Late fall and early spring offer cooler temperatures, fewer tourists, and lower prices, making it the perfect time to explore the city’s charm without breaking the bank. Paris is my “birthday city”, so I personally love visiting during the winter (January). Paris sales – les soldes – offer savvy shoppers huge bargains twice each year in January-February and June-July as stores slash their prices on current merchandise to make room for the new season’s collections. The is the perfect time to build your classic wardrobe, in the city of timeless fashion.
2. Stay in Budget-Friendly Neighborhoods
Opt for accommodations in neighborhoods like Bastille, Montmartre, or the Latin Quarter. Not only are these areas full of character, but they also offer a variety of affordable lodging options, from cozy hostels to budget hotels. You’ll be living like a local in no time, experiencing the city’s vibrant café culture and hidden gems. I recently stayed in Porte Maillot which is the 17th arrondissement. It was family-forward, meaning we were able to easily grocery shop, while being centrally-enough located to get to all the best places in a 10-15 minute Uber ride.
3. Embrace Paris’ Culinary Delights on Any Budget
Paris is a foodie’s paradise, and indulging in its culinary delights doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Feel free to swap fine dining for street food staples like crêpes, baguettes, and falafel. Visit local markets like Marché Bastille or Marché des Enfants Rouges to sample fresh produce and gourmet treats at a fraction of the restaurant prices. Please don’t miss out on fine dining opportunities – it is Paris after all. A favorite of mine is Guy Savoy (pronounced “Gee” as in “gee-k”), which is a Michelin-star restaurant. Pro-Tip: opt for the the lunch experience – it’s cheaper than dinner, for the same experience.
4. Take Advantage of Free Attractions and Museums
Paris is home to an array of free attractions and museums. Spend a day marveling at the stunning architecture of Notre-Dame, wandering through the picturesque streets of Montmartre, or exploring the lush gardens of Luxembourg. Many museums offer free admission on the first Sunday of each month, including the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Centre Pompidou. I will warn you though, I’ve been to the Louvre 3 times and I know I’ve not seen all of it.
5. Get Around Like a Parisian
The best way to experience Paris is on foot (get those steps in), but for longer distances, the city’s extensive public transport system is both efficient and economical. Consider purchasing a carnet (a book of 10 tickets) for the Metro and buses, or rent a Vélib’ bike for a scenic ride along the Seine. With the recent bedbug debacle, while it can get expensive, Uber is also your best friend; especially for dinner reservations.
6. Savor the Charm of Parisian Cafés
No visit to Paris is complete without a stop at a quintessential Parisian café. Opt for a café crème or a glass of wine, and spend hours people-watching or diving into a good book. This is something I love about Europe in general — the outdoor seating faces outward so that you can people watch. It’s a quintessential Parisian experience that doesn’t cost much but is utterly priceless.
7. Shop Like a Local at Flea Markets
For unique souvenirs and vintage finds, skip the expensive boutiques and head to Paris’s famous flea markets, like the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen. Bargaining is expected, so you can snag some incredible deals on everything from French antiques to fashionable attire.
Paris is not a layover destination; it’s a vibrant city teeming with art, culture, and life, waiting to be truly explored. With a bit of planning and a willingness to venture beyond your own cultural norms, those traveling on a reasonable budget can discover the true essence of Paris (but you need at least 3 days). From sipping coffee at a street-side café to marveling at the masterpieces in its world-renowned museums, Paris offers endless possibilities that don’t have to cost the earth. Though Paris will cost you some of your time, if done correctly, you will garner an appreciation for it, even if you don’t love it. Bon voyage!
